devoted hearts? what’s that? | pittsburgh pet photographer

. . .

My Great Dane, Emmet,  is the center of my world. When I come home, the excitement and absolute joy he greets me with makes everything else go away. For so many of us, our pets are our children, our confidantes, and our very best friends.

I am grateful to have found my calling in a career that’s not only fun, but rewarding on so many levels. Custom pet photography is just starting to become “normal,” as more and more people put off having children to further their education and dive into careers during their 20’s and early 30’s. I have been finding that most of my clients become great friends, as we are like-minded young professionals whose children have four legs 🙂 I still get the occasional head tilt or raised eyebrow when I proudly state, “I’m a portrait photographer; I specialize in pets.” Overall though, the pet industry is rapidly growing, and the demand for custom pet portraits is no exception.

One service that I offer is lesser known, though, and I’m on a mission to make sure that word spreads. Devoted Hearts sessions are custom portrait sessions for elderly or terminally ill pets. The session fee is discounted, as are prints and products from these sessions, and they also receive scheduling priority (I’ve even booked a same-day Devoted Hearts session before).

I really encourage my clients to be in the portraits with their pets, as the relationship between you and your best friend is exactly what I’m looking to highlight. As self-conscious as we can be as humans, we may not always like photos of ourselves, but our furry best friends give unconditional love, regardless of those ten extra pounds. Although photos of my dog make me smile on a daily basis, it’s images like this one that fill my heart. Our relationship isn’t something I could ever describe in words; he is my very best friend, my heart and soul. This photo captured that, and that is what I set out to do with every session – especially so for Devoted Hearts.

The following images are some of my favorites from Devoted Hearts sessions. I encourage  you to share this post with a friend or family member who has a sick or elderly pet; I hear so often that people regret not having professional quality images of their best friends – their time with us is simply too short.

I’d also like to point out an option in the event that your pet has a cosmetic issue due to his or her illness/condition. I recently photographed Smidgen, an adorable little girl with swelling in the face and eye due to an internal growth or tumor. In order to make Smidgen look more like the pup her Momma will always want to remember her as, I was able to retouch her eye to return it to its normal size and shape. The image below is the final photo, and under that is a close-up before and after to show the difference the editing made, while leaving the image looking completely natural.

web copy of review

“He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.”

The quote above is the reason I do what I do – it’s both the reason I dedicate my life to being the very best Momma I can be to my Emmet, and the reason that my passion for dogs pulled me to specialize in pet portraiture. Dogs give us their unwavering love, their lifelong loyalty, and they are the best friends most of us could ever ask for. We owe it to them to memorialize them with a custom photography session.

  • carolynSo thankful, char. Your images of smidgen make me smile daily. You really captured her spirit. They’re hanging in my foray so I can see her each time I use the stairs. It reminds me of how cute her little bum looked as she plopped-hopped downstairs. God, I miss her. Silly lily is a hoot with chumley. Although I thought he was going to eat her on the 4 hr ride home! He’s madly in love with her now, and is showing her all of his tricks. ReplyCancel

nash | pittsburgh wedding dog! dogs in weddings

I’ve already shared most of these on Facebook, but they’ll be featured on another blog in a few weeks and I wanted to make sure I blogged them first! 🙂

I LOVE crazy dog people. I especially LOVE when crazy dog people make sure their furry best friends play a part in their wedding day! Meet Nash, a handsome boxer whose Momma and Daddy got married last week!

casting call sessions | pittsburgh pet photographer | dog photography moon township, pa

Last month, some of you may recall that I posted a Casting Call asking for dogs who were available on a specific weekend for a 20 minute mini session. I post these when I’m looking for a certain breed, a certain look, or if I want to try out a new location or new piece of equipment. In this particular case, I was renting the Canon 135mm f2 lens (which I adored, by the way!) and I never trust myself to experiment with a new lens on a paying client. Casting Call sessions have been a great way for people to get one great photo of their pet if they’re not financially able to invest in a full portrait session, (mini sessions are that way, also, and less ‘experimental’ in nature, so keep an eye out for those!) and they’re a great way for me to “play” without feeling guilty or scheduling a reshoot if a session only yields a few good images. The response for this was so great, I decided to take on a full weekend of FREE mini sessions, so that I could get as much practice as possible with this lens.

Here are some of the images from my weekend of THIRTY dogs!

You may recognize Bogey from his parent’s engagement session.

a day in the life | colby the great dane | pittsburgh pet photographer

I recently started offering a new type of session: a day in the life. When you book this type of documentary portrait session, you’re inviting me to follow you and your pup(s) around for your daily activities, from a walk in the park, to a hike in the woods, to a visit to your favorite drive through (my Emmet LOVES the bank machine that sends him cookies!)… even long naps on the couch! 🙂

Day in the Life sessions last about 3-4 hours, and locations are unlimited! We can be as busy or as laid-back as you and your furry kiddo want, and the session is truly all about documenting your daily lives.  The session fee includes a gorgeous album jam packed with the story of a typical day for your pup! After greeting me and a few light testing shots, Colby’s day started off with some playtime in the yard, and ended in a bath after some swimming at the Misty Pines pond!

We went from Colby’s house to Misty Pines, where she worked a little bit on agility and walked the trail down to the pond.  She even got in to work on ‘fetch,’ which this stubborn girl doesn’t always like to do 😉

amstel’s first birthday party!

When I got an inquiry for my first doggie-birthday party, I was so excited.  You see, we crazy dog people are a rare breed (no pun intended).  When I meet fellow crazy dog people, I just know we are going to get along 🙂

I was thrilled to meet Amstel and learn that he is quite possibly the cutest Puggle in existence! I think he was excited to meet me, too 🙂  He waited patiently in the kitchen until he was allowed out to greet me. pittsburgh pet photographer southside pet photographer doggie birthday party (1)
